How Did I Not Know My Husband Was Having an Affair?

When the truth came out, the memories you thought you understood started changing shape.
The night he came home late. The weekend he was “at work.” That dinner where he was tired and quiet, and you just assumed he’d had a long day.
Nothing felt wrong.
And maybe that’s the part that haunts you most.
“I should have known”: the questions that follow the truth
If you’re here, you may have asked yourself some version of these:
How did I not know?I should have known. What kind of person misses something like that?
If those questions have been living in your chest, I’d like to gently answer the last one.
What kind of person misses it?
A person who was in love.
That’s the whole answer. Because when you love someone, you don’t build a case file on them.
You made room for his moods. You gave him space when he needed it. You took him at his word. You were making dinner, showing up, and living your life beside someone you trusted completely.
Nothing in you said to look closer. And that is what being in a marriage actually looks like.
Being careful was never your job
Protecting your heart from the person you chose was never supposed to be part of the arrangement. You were his wife, not his investigator. You were meant to come home and exhale.
So the fact that you trusted, that you let yourself be fully in it without one eye open the whole time, is not something to be ashamed of.
It’s something that deserves to be honored.
Why your brain didn’t catch the signs of the affair
I also want to share something about why you may not have seen it, because it can help you be kinder to yourself.
When you’re deeply attached to someone, your brain doesn’t scan them for threats the way it would a stranger. Often it does the opposite. It quietly filters out signals that feel too destabilizing to take in.
Not because you aren’t smart enough to see them. But because the thought of losing him was too big to look at directly.
So your brain protected you the only way it knew how: it let you keep going.
It was doing exactly what a loving, attached brain does. There’s nothing wrong with you for that.
The woman on the other side of this
There is a version of you on the other side of this who isn’t asking that question anymore.
She knows, at a settled level, that none of it was a reflection of her worth. She can look back at who she was in that marriage and feel something closer to peace than shame.
That woman is not far from where you’re standing right now. She just needs a little help getting there.
A gentle place to begin
That’s why I created Marriage After an Affair, for women sitting exactly where you are. It’s yours at no charge, whenever you’re ready.
The shame of “missing it” is one of the things that keeps women stuck the longest. And you have carried it long enough.
You can set it down now, beautiful soul. We’ve got you.
With care,
Dr. Shawn Haywood 💛
